Abstract:
Structural damping is a vital area to be explored during the design of dynamic structures wherein, the selection of suitable structural material is a challenging task for the designer. Aluminium, due to its high strength to weight ratio is used extensively in aerospace and automobile industry. Composite materials play a vital role when it comes to strength to weight ratio. Metal matrix composites (MMCs) possess significantly improved properties including high specific strength, specific modulus, damping capacity and good wear resistance compared to unreinforced alloys. Fly ash is a by-product material from power plants and has better material properties such as high stiffness and brittle nature. Pure nickel is regarded as one of the best material used in damping. In this study an attempt has been made to evaluate damping characteristic such as damping ratio and loss factor of LM6-Fly ash-Nickel MMC.
