Abstract:
3D volume segmentation plays a vital role in many medical imaging applications by extracting the regions of interest automatically which make the diagnosis process effortless. Choosing the appropriate algorithm while designing an automated system for 3D volume segmentation is complicated due to their performance on 2D image sources like MRI, PT and CT scanners. In this paper a critical appraisal of the current status of automated methods for the segmentation of medical images is presented. Current 3D volume segmentation techniques are surveyed with a prominence placed on enlightening the advantages and disadvantages of these methods for medical imaging applications. Also, the use of volume segmentations along with the difficulties faced while applying them to the real time automated scanner are also described and future 3D volume segmentation techniques is also suggested in this paper.
